Read, Read and Read

Stephen King Said:

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot”

Most good and famous writers will tell you the same advice, to Read a lot. Reading is the fundamental in learning. It will help you find your style and it will improve your writing skills. Don’t you know that through reading you can create a breath-taking story?

Create a reading habit and it will transform you into a good writer. Read 30 minutes every day to form a reading habit. Getting new ideas from your reading will help you write flawlessly.

How to create a reading habit?

Look for triggers that will force you to read. Eating is one way, riding on a public transportation going for work is another one, waiting for some one inside the mall, coffee break at work, going to bed and a lot more. Find your trigger point to start reading and soon it will develop into habit.

Once reading habit is developed, sooner you will become an effective writer subconsciously.

Seek Advice From Other Writer

Famous line by English poet John Donne:

“No Man Is an Island”

There is no such thing as a self-made millionaire. Do you agree? Everybody needs everybody. If you wanted to become a millionaire, then ask and listen to rich people.

A lot of writers out there are waiting for you to help, just tap them and they will help you.

Sometimes pride hold you from asking help. Better cook that pride chicken of yours and start asking for help. You will never be a good writer by your own. Those well experienced writer already knew how to be an effective writer because they’ve undergone a lot of hardships and trials as a writer. Meaning they are veteran in the field of writing.

Stop Watching Television!

Few Lines inside “On Writing” by Stephen King:

“If you’re just starting out as a writer, you could do worse than strip your television’s electric plug wire, wrap a spike around it, and then stick it back into the wall. See what blows, and how far.”

Television sucks most of your time. If you really wanted to be proficient in writing, then break a leg and break the TV as well. Be serious, reduce your time in watching TV or don’t watch at all.

Minimize Social Media and Other Electronic Gadgets

Today is the information age and it is hard to stay away from those poisonous stuffs.

Social media perhaps is a part of your daily job, connecting customers and clients. But, if you desire success in writing effectively? Then sacrifice will be made. Cut the time in using social media. Set time for it and after that, shut it down, the time sucking social media and your iPhone.

Be responsible to your action and be honest to your goal. social Media and other gadgets are tempting. Don’t be Judas to yourself.

  1. I agree with everything you have so beautifully written. The key word, to me, is focus. Cut out any activity that does not contribute to you improving as a writer. As for reading, I believe that anyone who wants to write well must be an avid reader. How else can we know what works in a novel (or non-fiction) if we don’t read a lot of them ourselves? Thank you for the informative and interesting post.

  2. I am always writing so I never have enough time to read. I do read but not nearly as much as Stephen King suggests. I do write every day and have written up to 7 stories in one day. I put my tv on all the time but I don’t watch it. I am usually writing. I listen to music as I write. I do take breaks to watch wrestling or a horror movie but I’d say most of time goes to writing. I love it. My insight would be for writers to get inspired by their other, passions, hobbies and interests. As a horror movie fan the majority of my work is in the horror genre. I write a lot about my good friend Rita B. Write about the things and the people you love. That’s my two cents.
